From Shop Floor to Team Leader: 20 Years in Precision Engineering

In precision engineering, experience matters, and it is the people behind the machines who truly make the difference.

At Grenville Engineering, long-serving team members are at the core of delivering a reliable, full fabrication service. James is a clear example of that. Starting at the very beginning and working his way through multiple departments, he now leads the machine shop and tube laser operations, playing a key role in maintaining quality, efficiency and continuous improvement.

Starting from the Ground Up

James has been with Grenville for 20 years, beginning his journey on a hands-on project jigsawing insulation for combustion boxes.

“I was keen to be trained up on as much as possible.”

That mindset quickly led him through different areas of the business, including welding, CNC punching, the press shop, flat-bed laser cutting, and ultimately the machine shop, where he found his strength.

Today, he is Cell Leader, overseeing machining operations and supporting the next generation of engineers.

Learning from Experience

Like many skilled engineers, James developed his expertise through hands-on learning and guidance from experienced colleagues.

“George Jones had a big influence. He helped me learn the basics and the skills needed for the machine shop.”

That foundation has supported his progression into leadership, where he now passes that knowledge on to others.

Precision, Quality and Consistency

In precision engineering, there is no room for error. James ensures quality through a hands-on approach.

“Constant checks. Spot checks throughout batches. Keeping an eye on the machines.”

This attention to detail supports Grenville’s commitment to delivering consistent, high-quality fabricated components across a range of industries.

Working with Advanced Machinery

Recent investment in advanced manufacturing technology has strengthened the team’s capabilities.

“We’ve had new machines come in, like the tube laser and upgraded milling machines. It means we can do more in-house.”

With equipment such as CNC lathes, vertical machining centres and the CNC tube laser, the team can achieve:

  • Faster production speeds
  • Greater consistency
  • Tight tolerances
  • Improved finish and overall quality

For James, a rewarding part of the job is working through complex components.

“You need to plan the process, visualise the part, programme it, and test it properly.”

From running simulations to carefully controlling speeds and feeds, every step is considered to ensure accuracy and avoid errors.

A Strong Team Culture

Beyond the machines, it is the people who stand out.

“The team are all willing to help. Management is approachable. It’s a great place to work.”

As a family-run business, Grenville continues to invest not only in machinery but in its people, creating an environment where skills are developed and shared.

Advice for the Next Generation

James’ advice for anyone starting out in engineering is simple and practical:

“Know your basics. Try different departments. Be willing to learn and make yourself diverse.”

It is this approach that has supported his own progression and continues to strengthen the team around him.
