Celebrating National Apprenticeship Week

Developing Future Engineers

At Grenville Engineering, we take great pride in nurturing the next generation of engineering talent. With seven apprentices currently working with us through the North Staffs Engineering Group (NSEG), we are committed to providing a well-rounded apprenticeship scheme that develops multi-skilled operators. Our approach ensures that apprentices gain hands-on experience across various departments, allowing them to explore different aspects of engineering and steel fabrication while building a strong foundation for their careers.

Many of our apprentices have progressed into leadership roles, with several moving up to team leader and management positions. In fact, our current Sales Director, Stuart Rawlinson started as an apprentice with Grenville 30 years ago, demonstrating the long-term career opportunities available through our apprenticeship programme.

Stuart Rawlinson, highlights the benefits of our apprenticeship programme: “An apprenticeship is a fantastic way to learn practical skills while gaining qualifications. Learning from experienced professionals gives apprentices the confidence to progress further in their careers. I found it incredibly rewarding as I advanced through my own apprenticeship, building a strong foundation and a much deeper understanding of the industry. This hands-on experience is invaluable in shaping the engineers and leaders of the future.”

Our apprentices are given real responsibilities from the outset, enabling us to identify their strengths and areas for development. By rotating through different departments, they gain exposure to a range of processes, enhancing their versatility and employability.

Sales Director and Apprentices at NSEG awards 2024

Recently, Grenville Engineering was honoured with the Training Company of the Year Award at the NSEG Awards—a true testament to our commitment to developing the next generation of skilled engineers. We are also incredibly proud of Joshua Harrison and Ryan Sullivan, two of our apprentices, who received Distinction Awards in recognition of their outstanding efforts.

One of our current shining examples of this success is Ryan Povey, who has excelled in his apprenticeship and recently won The Chairman’s Prize for Apprentice of the Year at the NSEG Awards. Ryan was also a finalist for Apprentice of the Year in the recent Metalforming Machinery Makers (MMMA) Awards in November 2024. We caught up with Ryan to learn more about his journey.

A Conversation with Ryan Povey – Chairman’s Prize Winner

Ryan shared that his inspiration for pursuing an apprenticeship in engineering came from his dad, who also works in the industry. “I’d heard about NSEG through my dad, who did an apprenticeship when he was my age. He inspired me to follow in his footsteps.”

When asked about how he found Grenville Engineering, Ryan explained, “NSEG suggested Grenville to me. Seeing my future ambitions align with the company, I couldn’t say no.”

Talking about his day-to-day experience, Ryan said, “Most days bring new challenges that push my skills to improve while also helping me develop new personal assets.”

Reflecting on the most valuable skills he has learned so far, Ryan highlighted, “My TIG welding and fabrication skills have improved massively, and I’ve also gained valuable knowledge in press operation.”

Ryan credited his mentors for much of his progress, saying, “I’ve had a lot of support from the team. Matt and Gary have been instrumental in helping me improve my fabrication skills and work more efficiently.”

One of the challenges he faced was welding an intricate bespoke stainless project. “At first, tackling such a detailed stainless steel fabrication project was tough, but I remained focused on refining my TIG welding skills. Now, I can take on intricate projects with confidence and precision.”

Winning The Chairman’s Prize for Apprentice of the Year at the NSEG Awards was a proud moment for Ryan. “I feel proud of myself for all my hard work, but I also appreciate the opportunities Grenville has given me to progress so quickly. I hope it inspires new apprentices to aim high and win the award.”

Looking ahead, Ryan sees himself staying with Grenville and progressing in his career. “I’d love to stay with Grenville and hopefully move up the career ladder into planning or sales.”

When asked about his specific interests within engineering, Ryan said, “I enjoy maths and problem-solving, so I’d like to move into planning or work within the sales aspect of engineering.”

For those considering an apprenticeship in engineering, Ryan had this advice: “It might be tough to start with, but with hard work and dedication, it’s definitely worth it. A company like Grenville focuses on creating a path to a successful career.”

Building a Future in Engineering

Ryan’s story is a testament to the opportunities that apprenticeships can provide. At Grenville Engineering, we believe in investing in young talent, equipping them with the skills and experience needed to build a successful career in the industry. Through hands-on training in laser cutting, metal forming, punching, welding, assembly, and machining, our apprentices gain a well-rounded skill set that prepares them for a future in engineering. We’re incredibly proud of Ryan and all our apprentices who continue to develop and thrive within our team.

As we celebrate National Apprenticeship Week, we encourage more young people to consider a career in engineering and steel fabrication. With the right training, support, and determination, an apprenticeship can open doors to an exciting and rewarding future.
